DESIGN

GREEN, SMART, AND SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPE DESIGN

Every landscape has a story to tell. Its own ecology, microclimates, and history all combine to create the environment it presents today and a vision of what is possible. The design challenge at May Creek is to honor the history of the site while expanding the possibilities for an ecological, sustainable, and smart landscape design that adds to the value.

Great landscape design begins with an exploration of your vision of the outdoor spaces that enable the lifestyle you desire. Our task is to balance our region's expansive tapestry of textures, colors, and aromas to bring your vision to life with spaces and outdoor settings.

Our initial designs serve as a canvas for collaboration, innovation, and exploration of what is possible for the site, aligned to the budget and respectful of the vision. At their core, our designs focus on natural beauty, smart functions, and sustainability.

Fireplaces & Fire Pits

sustainable design anchors and gathering places

Outdoor fire features of fireplaces and fire pits continue to grow in popularity in landscaped spaces. Transforming backyards into cozy outdoor living rooms, fireplaces often become a design anchor and tend to be where furniture and other elements of the outdoor living space are centered.

Fire features create warm focal points for outdoor entertaining and enjoyment. Controlling the environment with fire in outdoor living space extends the seasons to enjoy your investment. Incorporated as part of your patio or outdoor room, your family and guests can enjoy the flames of a wood or gas outdoor fireplace all year round.

Outdoor fire features add an architectural focal point. They are permanently installed and can be surrounded by slate, polished granite, rustic raw materials, touches of modern metals, clean concrete lines, or any other material that complement your home’s style.

Plant Selection

specilaty foliage to suit your vision and lifestyle

Before we suggest plants that will do well in your landscape, we want to understand how the plants will serve your vision and lifestyle. A review of the site may include suggested plantings that highlight or mask features of the home, accentuate or obscure sitelines or views.

Plants serve an architectural function defining floors, walls, and ceilings in outdoor rooms. Floors create living carpets and suggest movement through and around outdoor rooms. Colors and textures are formed with turf, ground covers, and creeping perennials.

Walls establish moods and set boundaries. They define outdoor rooms with an open, enclosed, or filtered feeling to the space. Screens created with clusters of trees, or masses of shrubs are a consideration.

Ceilings formed of tree canopies with varying heights and densities can create open or intimate feeling spaces. Directing or filtering light can accent the overall design and purpose of the room.

Within the outdoor living spaces, there may be artisan, stone, water, and fire features. Our recommendations for plantings will always enhance and coexist with these features staying true to the clients and our designer’s vision.

SITE CONDITIONS INFLUENCE OUR
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PLANT SELECTION

  • Light availability, intensity and duration
  • Irrigation quantity and quality
  • Exposure to wind and temperature extremes
  • Soil, drainage, and compaction
  • Competition from existing vegetation
  • Below ground conditions
  • Above ground architecture, obstructions, and views

THE DESIGN AESTHETIC AND YOUR
VISION IMPACTS OUR RECOMMENDATIONS

Patios and Verandas

multi-use spaces to connect the indoors to ourdoors

Inspirations for patio design comes from the setting and architecture of the home and continues with the detail of the room it will be attached to. Great patio design will have features and flow that create a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor spaces.

Captivating patio design is much more than the sum of materials. When visioned and implemented well, patios become a multi use space added to the home. Materials, elevations, drainage, movement of the sun across the patio, and the eventual placement of furniture, are all considerations of design.

Multi use patios can include food preparation and service areas, beverage centers along with dining space, seating areas, fire and water features. Our initial patio designs serve as a canvas for collaboration, innovation, and exploration of what is possible for the site, aligned to the budget and always respectful of the vision.

Water Features

Stylish focal points that provide a serene escape for any environment

Water features designed as a focal point create an organic aesthetic feel to the landscape design theme. The gentle rippling of a pool, bubbling of a creek, or reflections of a pool, enhances the natural feel of the outdoor space and create a tranquil ambiance.

Water features add elegance to a stylish escape themed design or noise cancellation to an urban oasis theme. Well designed water features provide a sustainable refuge for birds, pollinators, amphibians, dragonflies, migratory birds and aquatic life.

Consider elevating the design theme of your outdoor spaces by including water features. Whether they are a subtle element of an outdoor room or the focal point of the design water features will transform your outdoor experience.

Irrigation

water conservation and management for sustainable landscapes

Landscape irrigation is as much about water conservation and management as it is about sustaining your investment in landscaping. The goals of resource efficient irrigation are to balance landscape design, irrigation, and drainage to rainfall while maintaining needed nutrient levels.

Most off the shelf irrigation systems are the number one user of household water in the Pacific Northwest. In most cases this is potable water of a quality far above required levels for landscape nutrients.

Plants and grassess absorb water at a much slower rate than these types of irrigation systems provide. The result is over-watering, potentially damaging plants and over spray sending wasted water into waterways.

May Creek Landscape balances the introduction of nutrients at the lowest levels to sustain healthy, thriving grasses and plants. Matching landscape design to local soils and natural hydrology can significantly reduce, or eliminate, potable water consumption.

Sustainable irrigation innovations

  • Smart irrigation technologies based on signal or sensor data match local weather to irrigation schedules reducing resource consumption and runoff.
  • Well placed rainwater collection, storage and reuse can supplement potable water use.
  • Hard and soft elements of the design can balance the needs of irrigation and nutrient resources while maintaining beautiful landscapes.

Lighting

ethereal evening experiences to transform your landscape

Landscape lighting schemes are designed and strategically placed to showcase the beauty of outdoor living areas while adding an element of security. Illuminating walkways and points of interest in the design adds drama and beauty using safe, cost effective lighting components supported by the latest technology.

Landscape lighting fixtures provide ethereal lighting effects cascading down from a tree canopy to a subtle glow that washes over a low garden wall. More than just picking the right hardware, a pleasing lighting scheme is about artistry and the vision of the design.

Creatively incorporated into the initial design concepts, landscape lighting brings a new evening experience to the the space. When combined with fire, artwork and water features, landscape lighting completes the overall design.
